What is the Yaeyama Firefly?

Japan's Smallest Firefly

At just 2–6mm in body length, this is one of Japan's smallest fireflies. Unlike the slow, gentle glow of Genji fireflies found on the main islands, these flash rapidly several times per second while flying low, creating countless points of light dancing through the subtropical forest.

Other Firefly Species Coexist

In addition to the Yaeyama Firefly, Ishigaki Island is home to several other species including the Oshima Window Firefly, Iriomote Firefly, and Yellow-striped Firefly. You can enjoy different displays of light depending on the season and location.

Best Timing for Observation

March–May / Approximately 30 Minutes Right After Sunset

They only glow for a very short time right after sunset. Since they all stop lighting up together after about 20–30 minutes, the trick is to be on-site and ready before it gets dark. Numbers increase on humid nights after rain and around the new moon when it's darkest.

Peak Activity: ~30 Minutes Right After Sunset

Observation Tips

Use Red Light

White flashlights startle fireflies. Use a flashlight covered with red cellophane or set your smartphone screen to its dimmest setting.

Target Nights After Rain

Fireflies favor high heat and humidity. Humid nights after evening rain offer the best chance. Check the weather forecast frequently.

Insect Repellent & Long Sleeves Essential

Where there are many fireflies, there are also many mosquitoes. Be fully prepared with insect repellent spray and long sleeves/pants. Sneakers are recommended over sandals.
